New top-level Entities scripting export

Valve released a Counter-Strike 2 update on 5 November 2026 that speeds up the Retakes mode: defuses now finish instantly when the outcome is no longer in doubt, and the gaps between rounds are shorter.

The patch is small for most players but has some clear quality-of-life changes. As well as the Retakes tweaks, it adds a new interaction for pet chicken owners and makes one of the biggest changes yet to the map scripting system that community creators use to build custom maps and modes.

## Faster rounds in Retakes

Retakes puts players straight into post-plant situations, with defenders trying to retake a site where the bomb is already down. Until now, a round could drag on after it was already decided, while a defuser sat on the bomb waiting for the timer even though nothing could stop them.

Under the new rules, a defuse in Retakes completes immediately when two conditions are met:

- enough round time is left for the defuse to finish
- no active utility, such as smoke or fire, can still interrupt the defuse

If either condition fails, the defuse plays out as before. Valve has not said exactly how much time counts as enough or which utility counts as active. The update also cuts both the freeze time and the delay before the next round starts, though Valve has not given the new timings. The changes only apply to Retakes, so Competitive and Premier matches are unaffected.

## Pet chickens learn a trick

Players with a pet chicken now have something to do while they wait for a round to start. Pinging the chicken during freeze time asks it to perform a trick.

There is also a small privacy fix. Custom pet chicken names are now hidden when the game option for customised item text is set to hidden, matching how other personalised item names already worked.

## A new toolkit for Workshop creators

The largest part of the patch is aimed at map makers. Valve has added a new top-level export called Entities and moved several functions that used to sit under Instance into it. The main additions are:

- Entities.Spawn, for creating entities directly from scripts
- Instance.Precache now accepts entities to load in advance
- Instance.OnBotControl, so scripts can react when a player takes control of a bot
- CSPlayerController.IsControllingBot and CSPlayerController.GetControlledBotPawn, to check which bot a player is controlling
- CSPlayerPawn.Reset, a new function for player pawns

ConnectOutput and DisconnectOutput have also moved to Entities, and ConnectOutput now takes a configuration object. The old function names still work for now but are deprecated, so creators should start moving their scripts to the new structure.

## Frequently asked questions

When does a defuse become instant in Retakes?

A defuse finishes instantly when enough round time is left and no active utility can stop it. If smoke or fire could still interrupt it, the defuse plays out as normal.

Does the update change Competitive or Premier?

No. The faster defuses and shorter freeze time and round restart delay only apply to Retakes, so Competitive and Premier stay as they were.

What can pet chickens do now?

Pinging your pet chicken during freeze time asks it to perform a trick. Custom chicken names are also hidden when customised item text is set to hidden.

Will older Workshop map scripts break?

Not yet. The old function names still work, but they are deprecated, so creators should move their scripts to the new Entities structure.
